The Hot Desert

New Mexico

I took this picture just south of the New Mexico and Colorado border, near Questa, New Mexico during a hot summer morning.

I realize the desert represents so many seemingly negative things, such as scarcity, lonliness, isolation, dryness (lack of water), harshness and scratchiness (cacti and desert tundra!). Lack of cover from the hot sun. Snakes too.

But still, there is something about the desert that stirs my soul. I know I am not alone in this feeling, and this particular photo is one of my favorites. The grayish-green sagebrush plants catch my eye, as well as the openness of the scene. That sea of sand and short plants reminds me of staring out at an ocean.

Ah New Mexico! -Steve :)
